Two Sketches: In the Breeze and In the Sun

Profile, breeze, line drawing, head of a woman, Sarah Myers
Profile, Breeze
(c) Sarah Myers 2020
Pen on paper

What if we were surrounded by a beautiful, refreshing breeze?  Or what if we were sitting out in the bright sun, with a jaunty hat?

Two different kinds of weather, but both being enjoyed by the two people in these drawings.  The first woman is shutting her eyes in the onrush of wind; she shows us a tranquil profile as she leans forward and the air whips a few loose strands of hair over her forehead.  The second lady, gazing at us with a smile, is clearly suited up for the a sunny day at the seaside; we can see the cheerful pattern of her sundress and its little tie at the back of her neck, not to mention that clever hat...

These drawings are part of my special “sketchbook series”.  Their clear lines, a black pen following across a light sketch in pencil, make the portraits of women you will see from this procession of pictures; ladies with lively or peaceful faces, fashionable hairstyles and hats, and a sense of poise or grace.  It is a daily story, told with a pen and very occasionally with a line of charcoal; please enjoy the visual words that create their identities and expressions.

Two graceful women in the sketches today, one turning her head in profile, elegant hair and draped gown setting off her poise; the other, with a neckline of lavish ruffles and gleaming round earrings but a wistful face, eyes that gaze out of the picture as if she was thinking of some future time...

These two drawings are part of my special “sketchbook series”.  Their clear lines, a black pen following across a light sketch in pencil, make the portraits of women you will see from this procession of pictures; ladies with lively or tranquil faces, fashionable hairstyles and hats, and a sense of poise or grace.  It is a daily story, told with a pen and very occasionally with a line of charcoal; please enjoy the visual words that create their identities and expressions.

Two Sketches: a Pair of Stylish Hats and Their Wearers

Three-Quarters, Lady in a Hat, line drawing by Sarah Myers

For today, two hats which make quite definite statements, and their elegant wearers.  The first hat is a boldly stylish shape and carries a stripe across its jutting outline; the second is simply big and broad and would provide any amount of shade in a brash, sunny climate.  However I chose to name the second drawing after the lady's short shirt-jacket, a bolero pulled over her light polka-dot bodice.

Two drawings with flowers; one, a lady holding a lavish bouquet of daffodils, and then – a picture of changing seasons, appropriate for the onset of colder days.  This second image shows a woman with hair streaming back; the flowers of summertime float away as the snow rushes toward her eager face.

These two artworks are part of my special “sketchbook series”.

Let's imagine what we would most want; a bright sun overhead, inviting us to bask in its light, or a warm wind blowing around us as we dance?  Or both?  These two sketches are about weather and our reaction to it; one lady reclining at ease in the brilliant sunshine and the other whirling in a breeze so strong her hair flies bodily into the air.

Talking to Loneliness - Poetry by Sarah Myers

sketches, drawings, artist studio, poetry illustration, paintings, still-life
Studio Still-life, Sarah Myers. 2020.

Well, Loneliness, here you are again.
You refuse to enjoy the morning sunlight with me
Or help me to mix up the paint.

Instead you tell me all the bleak memories we share,
All the time you knew me so well,
All those hours you had your arms wrapped around me
And clung to me, as melancholy
As a rat in the rain.

I can't tell you to go away.  Why not?
Not out of pity, certainly, you're no happier with me
Than without me, sitting on the hill,
Sniffling instead of singing, Loneliness.

No, because of circumstance only.
I can't shake myself, and put on a face,
And go see the rest of the world
And leave you alone by yourself, Loneliness.

Outside, the quail whistles in the long grass.
The wild green grows like a disreputable botanical garden
Full of jungle specimens with dangling berries
And spiky thistles.

The little dog dozes, whiskers spread
On the brown carpet, as if some morning magnetism
Between fur and floor
Keeps her sound asleep.

Listen, Loneliness, this time my life is different than it was.
This time you're no more here
Than a thousand, million others of real souls
Who sit the same way I do, in the quiet.

These I invite, even as I bow you out.
Look, friends, here
Is the slant of sunlight from an open sky,
Coursing across a shuffle of winged papers.
Papers unkempt
But covered with pencil lines,
Faces that look at yours, and waving arms,
Arches and lines, notes from a future
Sketched in a most primitive way, as if
Someone was one step away
From charcoaling them on the walls of a cave
With a burnt-out torch.

Over here is a raucous crowd of paint tubes,
Caged in a gracious fruit-basket of silver wire.
Here are the eyes of a line of canvases, staring
In bewilderment at their own chaotic colors.
They aren't alone, a whole party of them
Clamors for us
To put on our brightest clothes, put on jewels,
Hats, wreaths of flowers,
Pose elegantly before the broken mirror,
Hear the silence and the music
Of a year gone down a road none knew,
Not even those
Who found Loneliness beside them every moment,
Spreading dust in the food,
Blurring the outlines of the world
Like rain distorting light beyond the glass.

In this silence I hear the solitude, but not the loneliness.
A burden rolls along, a planet like the rock
That Sisyphus trundled up the slope in Hades.
We slip aside, like sparrows, out of the way,
Fluttering and trembling.

But this I say, both to my friends
And to the ghost of Loneliness with its muttering and threatening.
We have more courage, we who dare the quiet,
Than those who shriek and run from it, gathering, grinning and boasting
That nothing can change them, that they cannot die
Because they would rather die, and see others die,
Than face this empty light, this warm silence.

Far less courage we have, perhaps, than those
Who armor themselves with kindness and good
And stand between the wreck of life
And the shadow that comes with an in-drawn breath.

But all the same, friends, invite me in
Instead of the Loneliness that left by my window
A moment ago, shredding away in the sunlight.
If we cannot sing, at least we will whisper.
There is a way, and a place,
Made of many ways and all places.
Perhaps it takes solitude to find
The faces of friends where we saw
Only Loneliness and the sunlight of summer.

The Orange Flower - Painting by Sarah Myers

painting, Sarah Myers, contemporary art, Orange Flower, portrait
The Orange Flower, Sarah Myers.  Acrylic on canvas, 2020.

She turns toward us, but her dark eyes remain averted; the expression of her scarlet mouth and her downward glance shows she is deep in her own thoughts. The bloom in her hair flares like a torch against the rich blue of the background. Painted 2020, acrylic on canvas.

She faces us directly, her eyes sparkling like the rich jewellery ornamenting her sinuous neck. A large aqua-green collar wraps her warmly and a pink satin toque hat sits perched elegantly on her head. The canvas, even with its deep, intense red, recedes from woman's poised presence, her confidence filling the entire picture. This work was painted toward the end of 2019.
