   Which would you prefer to be doing?  Reclining in the sun on the beach or playing a splendid piano concerto with great concentration?  Two horizontal sketches for us, much rarer in my sketchbook than drawings using the vertical orientation of the page...

    These two drawings are part of my special “sketchbook series”.  Their clear lines, a black pen following across a light sketch in pencil, make the portraits of women you will see from this procession of pictures; ladies with lively or tranquil faces, fashionable hairstyles and hats, and a sense of poise or grace.  It is a daily story, told with a pen and very occasionally with a line of charcoal; please enjoy the visual words that create their identities and expressions.

This ornate sculpture is a mingling of various times. It was inspired by a sixteenth century painting of King David, where the painter dressed the ancient monarch in a rich and peculiar costume of the artist's own time and perched him on a tree with other ancestors in the line of the Christ-child – a symbolic subject coming from earlier medieval days. In my sculpture the King is alone, barely laying his fingers to the invisible harp-strings; pensive, wrapped perhaps in the reflections brought by his own prophetic music. I have rendered the rich embroidered clothes with lines directly drawn into the clay – a technique called sgraffito – and roughly hatched with a sharp tool to paradoxically create the deep fur collar of his cloak. His large harp rears in front of him like the prow of a ship; a few leaves from the tree cluster at his back.

 In pale light, the tiny orchids immaterialize into fluttering wings, dancing up and down across the arch of their stem. But the miniscule blooms are full of fragrance that dances with them; the air is full of a beauty whose melody - or tinted haze - or intangible happiness - floats far beyond the little handful of white-and-pink flowers.

   This drawing is inspired by two sources I find marvelous: classical music and skillful hands.
    Someday, I tell myself, I will sketch a series, studies of hands belonging to musicians, potters, carpenters, couturiers and others.  Because every creative profession produces its own unconscious poise and typical movement in the fingers.
   Here I also tried to capture concentration in the eyes...
