Terracotta Vase with Horse, Sarah Myers

A rearing horse forms the forward part of this small vase in red earthenware.  Light-heartedly in the spirit of ancient art such as the old Persian rhytons, the container was created as a present for my sister.  I have placed a cluster of brilliant flowers - nasturtiums, geraniums (pelargoniums) and a coral-coloured rose - into its wide mouth.  This burst of scarlet, salmon, flame orange and deep yellow glows with intensity in the morning sunlight, matching the strong, natural red of the clay and the energy of the pawing, snorting horse.

Still-life with Pumello, Sarah Myers

In this very large still-life are two warm red, earthenware vessels, hand-built by my sister, Amy Myers; around and inside the clay pots are fruit, dark grapes and an enormous, yellow-green pumello. The colour of the pumello is, as depicted in the picture, a bracing chartreuse; it is a plump fruit, ancestor of the grapefruit, with thicker rind and blander taste. It is slightly flattened, and for the painting's composition I actually propped it upright on the single grape you see under it to the right. The rest of the grape cluster, climbing from the earthenware bowl, fills the space left between bowl and the tall red pot. The artwork is acrylic on canvas.

Woman with a Bowl, Sarah Myers

My newest sculpture strides gracefully forward, bearing a bowl I have clustered with flowers. Her long robes flow back and around her heels as she moves; her left hand is raised to balance the bowl atop her head – just now filled with a gift of blooms in orange and gold – and her right hand, swung down by her side, grasps a bottle or large flask.

She is created from red earthenware which gives a lively tint to her form; the bouquet is a bunch of bronze chrysanthemums, a yellow rose, and leaves of desert plants and citrus.

Relying on the value of spontaneity and immediate vision, I completed her in two day's worth of work; all the modeling was done with a light hand with an eye to preserving an image of beauty, refreshment and vitality.

     On an overcast day, these bright colours came inside - simply a yellow rose, a dark red rose, cherry-coloured geraniums, some orange lantana. In a graceful vessel by my sister Amy Myers, they bring a vivid fistful of beauty to the room, like the music of trumpets and violins on an empty, still noon.

The Christmas Tree

   Christmas draws near. The fragrance of fir-branches fills the house, the sparkle of lights catches the eye; we count the days one by one. We pretend that our tree has been caught under a snowfall of great flakes as large across as a cake or a halo. The ornaments we hang on the boughs are brightly coloured and toy-like. Joy is always full of beauty, but it is not always serious. So we have a camel, thinking of the Wise Men on their long, expectant journey across the desert; and an angel in a gold robe, announcing the birth of the child who is God; and a sheep for the shepherds, the ones who saw an open heaven and the choirs singing eternal glory. Then we have other little figures with no significance except happiness and cheer... We know that our tiny decorations, our songs, our twinkling lights, cannot express the splendor of the world of Christmas. They only express our happiness in its reality, and in the presence of that reality with us - every day, but perhaps more closely felt, more rich and more dear to us now as we hold to the light in the darkness, to the songs in the night, to a sudden glimpse of the eternal. 

Snowflakes and ornaments, except for the glass soldier Sandro and the glass pendants, are my handwork.
