    Within the transparent globe of the bowl, the fish steers itself softly through the water; behind, looking into its small world, a woman watches its swift movements. Simple lines in charcoal capture the fish, glass sphere, and the onlooker. This is from an ongoing series of sketches and drawings in minimal line. Still-life with Pumello, Sarah Myers

In this very large still-life are two warm red, earthenware vessels, hand-built by my sister, Amy Myers; around and inside the clay pots are fruit, dark grapes and an enormous, yellow-green pumello. The colour of the pumello is, as depicted in the picture, a bracing chartreuse; it is a plump fruit, ancestor of the grapefruit, with thicker rind and blander taste. It is slightly flattened, and for the painting's composition I actually propped it upright on the single grape you see under it to the right. The rest of the grape cluster, climbing from the earthenware bowl, fills the space left between bowl and the tall red pot. The artwork is acrylic on canvas.

Woman with a Bowl, Sarah Myers

My newest sculpture strides gracefully forward, bearing a bowl I have clustered with flowers. Her long robes flow back and around her heels as she moves; her left hand is raised to balance the bowl atop her head – just now filled with a gift of blooms in orange and gold – and her right hand, swung down by her side, grasps a bottle or large flask.

She is created from red earthenware which gives a lively tint to her form; the bouquet is a bunch of bronze chrysanthemums, a yellow rose, and leaves of desert plants and citrus.

Relying on the value of spontaneity and immediate vision, I completed her in two day's worth of work; all the modeling was done with a light hand with an eye to preserving an image of beauty, refreshment and vitality.

Sculpture, imaginary portrait, and vessel all in one, the Basket Bearer's tranquil quiet is changeless. With fruit in the basket-bowl balanced atop her head, she figures as a centerpiece expressing abundance and natural riches.
