Creating drawings of this type is very intriguing, as the basic technique is almost opposite that of a usual sketch. Here, the ground of the paper must be used as the shadow, rather than the highlight. It is the density and strength of the pencil that determines the brightness of the glow. Because I have purposefully left the white charcoal unblurred and unblended, you may see in the details the myriad of tiny lines that form the face's shapes and expressions.

Here are three flower images to welcome the new spring; the rich, flawless scarlet of a superb ranunculus bloom, the angelic shower of jasmine trumpets lighting the evening shade, and the perfect symbol of happiness, a yellow daisy against a cloudless blue sky. Daisy and ranunculus are growing in my sister's garden, a dream-like spot you can read about here; the jasmine is a vine I've placed in the pillared patio of our house.

What are the colours of white? The pure scent of the jasmine blossom, the billowing shoulders of an unstained cloud; the pearl-cold, pearl-small dot of the moon among the palm-fronds; the delicious ivory of a new rose; that burst of exultant happiness, the Star of Bethlehem flower; the frail lace of an apricot bloom which is the delight of an eager bee. Here are many tints of white, the colour without shadow.

I am intrigued with the majesty of these tall Amaryllis blooms, the way their grand form combines with such fresh, cheerful colours of red, white, and apple-green - or we should say, Amaryllis green, for it too is unique and irreplacable... A towering crown of flowers swaying against the clean blue sky.

Earlier this year I was privileged to take photos for Amy Myers' "Rustic Collection", a series of hand-thrown ceramics inspired by the Middle Ages - by its rustic daily ware, produced at the same time the great French cathedrals were being built, and full of the same astonishing combination of sunlight, quiet, and overwhelming nervous energy.

Amy Myers has conveyed this emotion into her collection, which are her own forms and conception but also her own materials: glaze, clay, and combinations. I endeavored to capture their quality in my photography. Beside the set of pictures I took for her site, I also created a still-life with the bowl from the series. I feel it to be a sober, handsome composition, suggesting simplicity rather than over-abundance; the quiet gravity of the pottery has created its own core balance.
