What are the colours of white? The pure scent of the jasmine blossom, the billowing shoulders of an unstained cloud; the pearl-cold, pearl-small dot of the moon among the palm-fronds; the delicious ivory of a new rose; that burst of exultant happiness, the Star of Bethlehem flower; the frail lace of an apricot bloom which is the delight of an eager bee. Here are many tints of white, the colour without shadow.

    One immense cloud-bank spread its towers across the South-eastern sky as the sun went down opposite. Scaling the clear, empty desert night, the cresent moon looked backward at these monarchs of water and air, who took the form of a fantastical surf, a radiant bastion of remaining day, a crowd of staring faces, an ethereal fog of cold blue and pearl-pink. At last the clouds disappeared in the rising night, save for an occasional, sullen flash of lightening.  The moon continued on its way, growing brighter and lonelier and stronger. But the night remains only in the imagination, while the clouds and the last of the sun left their glory, in some small way, in this collection of pictures.

      Except for cropping and my signature, there is no edit on these pictures. They are what the camera saw.

 While the earth of the desert twinkles monotonously and changelessly mile after mile, with gravel and the dark network of dry creosote bushes, the sky stretches over it a reign of overwhelming, unshakable but temperamental power. And on those days when into the intense and endless blue sail the giants of the sky - the desert thunderheads - it is as if a mighty, unknown world has opened out above, with its own language of wind, light and space. We small strangers peer upward into the next sphere...

Failure of Solar Power

Days and Days of This

    I’ve been eager to post so many things for you to see – a very new painting, old sculptures safely unpacked, a sketch or so, a whole half-dozen different images. But they all needed my camera, and my camera needed the Sun.

    All week the sky has been a gentle, moody, glum expanse of cloud. Now and then the rain comes down in the same gentle, depressed manner, leaving palm-trunks dripping black and the little concavities and cracks in the patio shaded darker with damp – merely shaded, since even during this wet spell the air here is so dry standing water evaporates immediately.

   I am putting up an eyewitness photograph to substantiate my claim. As soon as the Sun breaks through consistently I will seize my camera and drag some artwork out into the longed-for light.

   The meaning of the four seasons is utterly dependent on latitude and just a little on sea-current.  My feet, making a bold jump the equivalent of two latitude-lines, have carried a brain with them not entirely adjusted to the difference...
    The world is filled with so many varied winters.
