     She arrives with a curved basket, full of spring brilliance, and with a cluster of tall plumes twisted into her hair. Her eyes are thoughtful, her head tilted elegantly toward her armful of new flowers.

    My latest sculpture, she is formed from vivid red terracotta and was finished with about a day's worth of work, keeping the spontaneity of her creation through to her kiln-fired completion. Now she is bringing you a bouquet of blooms from the garden – jasmine, bougainvillea, pelargonium, nasturtium and long sprays of lavender.

   Diligent bees with gold bands and filmy wings, humming in and out of the flowers - the ferocious-looking but most welcome guardian of the garden, a giant bronze dragonfly - the tiny silver glint of a blue-gray butterfly, with a curled tongue still tasting sweetness - all these small visitors have been spotted among the flowers, taking as their own world the beauty and brightness of the garden. I captured these images in my sister's garden in the desert, whose progress you can read about here; the pictures are from late summer, early autumn days when the air was full of busy creatures, full of this smaller world which we gladly welcome as our own.

What are the colours of white? The pure scent of the jasmine blossom, the billowing shoulders of an unstained cloud; the pearl-cold, pearl-small dot of the moon among the palm-fronds; the delicious ivory of a new rose; that burst of exultant happiness, the Star of Bethlehem flower; the frail lace of an apricot bloom which is the delight of an eager bee. Here are many tints of white, the colour without shadow.

 In pale light, the tiny orchids immaterialize into fluttering wings, dancing up and down across the arch of their stem. But the miniscule blooms are full of fragrance that dances with them; the air is full of a beauty whose melody - or tinted haze - or intangible happiness - floats far beyond the little handful of white-and-pink flowers.

Returning from a walk in my sister's rose garden, the radiance of these roses against the sky persuaded me to create a post dedicated to their grace. They are simple, open blooms because of the warmth and light, the late summer brightness you see surrounding them.
